About the workshop:
This workshop is for beginners with no prior knowledge in watercolour painting, as well as anyone who has had some experience with it. It is especially useful for those who have attended some classes before but still struggle with painting. Suitable for students, hobbyists, crafters, makers, entrepreneurs, professionals, homemakers, retirees etc.
Course Outline
- Lesson 1 (Introduction)
- Introduction to and exploration of basic watercolor materials
- Introduction to and demo on watercolor control
- Introduction to color mixing
- Lesson 2 (Landscapes, Cityscapes, Sea Cliffs, Clouds)
- Mix colors on the palette and paper
- Prime the paper
- Manage the watercolor window
- Control the flat brush
- Execute smooth, clean blends and washes
- Other techniques – wet in wet, wet on dry, wet on damp, dry fade-out, glazing, lifting
- Troubleshoot, improvise and recalibrate flow/balance
- Lesson 3 (Nebulae, Fruit, Vegetable)
- Mix colours on the palette and paper
- Mix quickly and flexibly
- Create an environment for paint to move
- Execute dynamic washes
- Other techniques – wet fade-out, tapping, induced runs etc
- Troubleshoot, improvise and recalibrate flow/balance
- Incorporate gouache
- Lesson 4 (Leaves, Flower and more)
- Mix colours in the brush, on the palette and paper
- Use the painting triangle approach
- Control the round brush
- Apply what you’ve learnt to paint almost everything
- Apply what you’ve learnt to paint more creatively
About the Instructor:
Li Ching (Leach) is an artist who works with watercolors and ink, as well as mixed media such as gouache, acrylics and clay. She has exhibited in Singapore, Japan and Korea. She draws aesthetic influences from fairytales, old picture books, nature and tutelage under local Chinese Ink master, Nai Swee Leng and Japanese master potter, Yamaguchi Saya.
Mostly self-taught in art, Li Ching studied at Singapore Chinese Girls School, Raffles Institution, the National University of Singapore, Singapore Institute of Management as well as the Singapore Management University. She has worked in Human Resources, Internal Audit, Training as well as Gemological Sciences. Her varied life experiences give her a unique approach and perspective to art and the art of teaching.
Li Ching is an adjunct lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), as well as Brand Ambassador for German paint makers, Schmincke.
As a Book Illustrator, Li Ching was featured at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content in 2018 & 2019. Her first book, “Jade’s Quest For Her Heritage” was published in 2019 with endorsement from the National Heritage Board and the SG Bicentennial. She has illustrated three other books – “I Wish I Had A Dog”, “Where Shall I Sleep Tonight?” and “To Let The Light In”.
Li Ching is passionate about teaching and enjoys event work. Her private clients include the National Gallery of Singapore, Six Senses Resorts, Overjoyed, Rolex, Hendricks Gin, Franck Muller, Cartier, The Singapore Botanic Gardens, The Botanical Art Society of Singapore, The National Library Board etc. She volunteers regularly for schools and non-profit organizations.
